Coaching is something we're all familiar with. Wellness coaching is a new addition to the coaching ranks whose focus is getting us healthy by natural means.
We have become accustomed to hearing about business coaches, financial coaches, career coaches and many more. Coaching is a well-respected and legitimate job or profession.
We're all familiar with successful sports teams that are paired with superior coaches.
Our ready acceptance of coaches assumes that professional coaches have legitimate credentials, specific knowledge and experience and specific qualities. The greatest quality without question is that they be good listeners.
We expect that they also will be patient, analytical, relational, and have the ability to see obscure abstract relationships.
Quackery... or the Future
A good many in the medical community look there collective noses down on the new health coaching trend with suspicion and derision and make no bones about labeling it "quackery".
Patients today are becoming more savvy about traditional medical outcomes that are less than beneficial and are insisting upon a more holistic approach in their medical treatment. They're looking to distance themselves from the traditional treatment of symptoms and want to talk about a cure or getting to the root causes of their maladies.
What exactly is the remedy for my illness?
Traditional medicine and treatment have become cumbersome and overburdened, complicated by too many patients, too little time and frankly too little training.
Many illnesses and much suffering are going by the wayside because diagnosis involves hospitalization, very expensive and sometime superfluous testing to aid in discovering the clues for a well founded diagnosis. Often years pass with no correct diagnosis along with unnecessary medication, more testing, suffering and sometimes death.
The records of malpractice provide enough evidence of the miseries that are associated with conventional medicine. This is not to imply that all of conventional medicine is worthless, to the contrary, conventional medicine is a valuable ally that is to be treasured but used wisely. The sole purpose of this critique of conventional medicine is to turn our attention to looking for solutions and treating illness by a more holistic approach to seek root causes and not just mask symptoms.
Missing the Focus
Many are not aware of the glaring and longstanding deficiencies in traditional doctor training. They have little training in nutrition and alternative modalities.
Today it is widely acknowledged and accepted that all disease ultimately starts in the digestive tract. What we eat greatly determines the overall state of our health and wellbeing.
The other glaring deficiency is that the business model for traditional medicine today is flawed. There are too many patients, too much bureaucracy, too few doctors resulting in observations or lack thereof that are flawed by insufficient involvement with the patient.
What's the Alternative?
Greater interaction with a professional health counselor typically results in better and quicker diagnosis. A greater amount of time spent with the patient gives a greater opportunity and chance of seeing behaviors that could point to solutions and cures. Coaches, because they know they must spend lots of time with each patient, are able to relate seemingly unrelated actions or the lack there of to the reasons for an illness and or the symptoms of a disease.
For instance I may not see or be aware that my daily eating habits and or activity levels are directly responsible for the symptoms that I present to my coach. He, however, because of his knowledge of nutrition, exercise and eating habits will see more readily that I'm consuming way too many carbs or fried foods or not eating enough fruit and veggies He then can prescribe an eating plan specific to my complaints and illness to counteract the many years of poor choices I've made. Additional time spent with the patient and a repertoire of knowledge of nutrition and exercise programs can make all the difference in the outcomes of our health and wellness. Also being accountable to a specific professional on a more regular basis is a significant differences from traditional medicine. The coach is afforded the opportunity to see more relationships between the lifestyle I live and why I'm diabetic, or filled with pain and complaining of digestive problems.
More real solutions, cures and on target diagnosis is in our future. Health coaches are here to stay.
